Partners
Funding for the Workshop and Learning Opportunities Grant program is provided under the Strategic Initiative “Advancing the Science to Reduce Tobacco Abuse and Nicotine Addiction” by the following partners:

  • Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Institutes of: Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction, Cancer Research, Aboriginal Peoples’ Health, Circulatory and Respiratory Health, Gender and Health, Human Development Child and Youth Health
  • Canadian Cancer Society (CCS)
  • National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC)
  • Heart and Stroke Foundation
  • Health Canada
  • Canadian Lung Association in partnership with l’Association pulmonaire du Québec

Program objectives
Objectives of the Strategic Initiative:

  • To foster links between researchers or between researchers and research end-users within geographical regions or populations in Canada
  • To build capacity for research using an innovative approach
  • To support the sharing of knowledge, initiation of collaborations or the planning of relevant research activities

Specific objectives of the Workshop and Learning Opportunities Grant:

  • To support workshops, meetings and events which focus on building research capacity by bringing together individuals from different disciplines and sectors to provide researchers and research end-users the opportunity to learn about current research and to work together
  • To support projects focusing on regions or populations in which there has been a historic lack of capacity for research

Suggested research areas and methodologies
Priority is given to first-time applicants, to regions or populations where development of research is more acutely needed and to events that address research priorities identified by the CTCRI Research Summit:

  • Building capacity for tobacco-related research in the region or population
  • Providing unique opportunities to bring together individuals from different disciplines and sectors
  • Supporting the sharing of knowledge, initiation of collaborations or the planning of relevant research activities

Workshops, courses and other educational methods or tools are appropriate for this grant program.

Value of grant
Each successful proposal may receive a one-time grant of up to $15,000. Work is expected to be completed in four (4) months time.
The number of applications supported annually is contingent upon the availability of funds and the quality of proposals.

Deadlines

Grant report due within three months of workshop or event
Financial statement due within three months of workshop or event

Research proposals must also meet the following eligibility criteria that are specific to this grant program in order to be considered for funding:

  • Topic is related to both research and tobacco abuse and/or addiction and intervention
  • Research could involve identifying research priorities, discussing and/or developing research frameworks and/or disseminating research results
  • Method involves multiple participants and could be in the form of a workshop or another educational opportunity
  • Approach is innovative and deals with engaging new topics and methods or involves new populations (e.g., researchers or practitioners new to tobacco control, historically under-represented regions or populations)
  • Proposal demonstrates that any current funding will not adequately support the stated objectives of the proposal

How applications are evaluated
All proposals are first reviewed for General Eligibility Criteria and Program Specific Eligibility Criteria before being accepted for Review.

Submissions will undergo Expert Staff Review against the following criteria:

Priority is given to first-time applicants and to regions or populations where development of research is more acutely needed.

Team Composition:

  • The principal Applicant and Co-applicants demonstrate the ability to carry out the work associated with the proposed project
  • At least one of the Applicants or Co-applicants must have a 'track-record' in tobacco control, tobacco abuse or nicotine addiction research
  • The team and/or preliminary list of invitees include investigator(s) new to tobacco abuse/nicotine addiction/tobacco control research

Originality and Importance:

  • A satisfactory rationale is presented for why the project is needed to provide training opportunities, increase networking or facilitate research planning/translation
  • The proposal demonstrates a novel/unique opportunity for networking, capacity building, research planning or translation
  • The proposed project demonstrates value to expected participants and/or potential to have a positive impact on research in tobacco abuse and nicotine addiction

Methodology:

  • The proposed project format is appropriate to the aims and is likely to result in expected outcomes/next steps
  • The plan for executing the project, including all planning and follow-up activities is reasonable and achievable. The potential difficulties are articulated and contingency plans offered.
  • The preliminary plan for dissemination of project outcomes and application of next steps is realistic and useful
  • The approach is innovative, engaging new topics or methods or involving new populations (e.g., researchers or practitioners new to tobacco control, historically under-represented regions or populations)

Budget:

Although projects will be evaluated independently of budget, the CTCRI requires budgets to be justified and reserves the right to reduce budgets if expenses are not warranted. Information on eligible expenses and financial administration of award is described in detail in the Application guide.
