Funding for the Researcher Travel grant program is provided under the Strategic Initiative “Advancing the Science to Reduce Tobacco Abuse and Nicotine Addiction” by the following partners:
- Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Institutes of: Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction, Cancer Research, Aboriginal Peoples’ Health, Circulatory and Respiratory Health, Gender and Health, Human Development Child and Youth Health

Program objectives
Objectives of the Strategic Initiative:
- To provide opportunities for students and individuals affiliated with NGOs/community groups to network, to expand their knowledge and to gain experience by giving presentations at conferences/meetings which are relevant to their tobacco-related research.
- To support the translation of tobacco-related research through presentation at meetings and conferences.
Specific objectives of the Researcher Travel grant program:
- To assist individuals in attending scientific meetings and conferences in order to increase research capacity, learning and collaboration.
- To fund travel to relevant meetings and conferences where students and researchers present their findings on tobacco abuse and nicotine addiction to facilitate the development of excellent research proposals which are relevant to the priorities of the CTCRI's research agenda.
Suggested research areas and methodologies
Any poster or presentation of research related to tobacco abuse and nicotine addiction is eligible for support.
Preference will be given to proposals that address research priorities identified by the Canadian Tobacco Control Research Summit.
Research employing new or unconventional methodologies is encouraged, but proposed methods must be appropriate to the research question(s).
Value of grant
Grants of up to $3000 are available to support travel and accommodations. In some cases, the value of the grant may exceed $3000 (for example, for conferences involving international travel).
The number of applications supported annually is contingent upon the availability of funds and the quality of proposals.

General eligibility criteria
Research proposals must meet the following eligibility criteria relevant for all CTCRI grant programs:
- The Principal Applicant (PA) is a Canadian citizen or legal resident (Co-applicants may be citizens or residents of other countries).
- Applicant(s) is NOT a member of the staff or Board of Directors of the CTCRI, or a staff member of any CTCRI funding partner organization.
- The research proposal demonstrates basic relevance to tobacco abuse/nicotine addiction/ tobacco control.
- The research proposal addresses research priorities identified by the Canadian Tobacco Control Research Summit.
- Applicant(s) has disclosed other sources of funding.
- Commercial interests have been disclosed or applicant(s) has indicated no commercial interests.
- Applicant(s) has affirmed lack of support from the tobacco industry.
- Applicant(s) can demonstrate that he/she works in an environment that adequately supports research through ethical review, administration of funds, provision of space and equipment, etc.
- Research plans include gender analysis, or it has been demonstrated that this is not appropriate.
- Proposal avoids duplication of previous research, unless it can be demonstrated that replication is of value.
- Proposal includes a description of expected outcomes and/or a preliminary dissemination plan (not applicable for travel grants).
- Program-specific criteria are addressed (see next paragraph).
Grant program-specific eligibility criteria
Research proposals must also meet the following eligibility criteria that are specific to this grant program in order to be considered for funding:
- The Principal Applicant must be conducting graduate or post-doctoral work and must be affiliated with an accredited academic program. OR The Principal Applicant must be affiliated with a non-governmental organization or community group conducting tobacco control research or evaluation.
- The Principal Applicant's abstract has been accepted for the upcoming conference for which the funding is requested (funding cannot be applied for retroactively).
- The proposal demonstrates that any current funding will not adequately support the stated objectives of the proposal.
- The Principal Applicant has not been awarded another CTCRI travel grant to present at a conference or event in the same calendar year as the current application. This does not include attendance at the special tobacco control conferences such as the World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCOTH) or the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) conference.
How applications are evaluated
All proposals are first reviewed for General Eligibility Criteria and Program Specific Eligibility Criteria before being accepted for Review.
Submissions will undergo Expert Staff Review against the following criteria:
Principal Applicant:
- The Principal Applicant is involved in the research for which the abstract has been accepted and demonstrates the ability to give the presentation at a specific conference/meeting.
- The Research Supervisor or team members show support for the Applicant's attendance and presentation at the conference.
- Grant will provide a useful experience or training opportunity for the Applicant.
Originality and Importance:
- The topic of the presentation is a unique contribution to the field and relates to CTCRI priorities.
- The conference is relevant to the applicant's research and will provide the applicant with new knowledge relevant to his/her program of study and/or research.
- The Applicant's presentation will provide a valuable learning opportunity for attendees at the meeting/conference.
Budget:
Although projects will be evaluated independently of budget, the CTCRI requires budgets to be justified and reserves the right to reduce budgets if expenses are not warranted. Information on eligible expenses and financial administration of award is described in detail in the Application guide.

Use of Abstract and Reporting Information. All abstracts and reports, including submitted publications, will be posted on the CTCRI website. Please review the CTCRI's Privacy, Intellectual Property and Use of Research Information Statement (20 Kb) for more information and contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
End of Grant Report. Information collected from End of Grant Reports is used to evaluate CTCRI grants programs to better meet the needs of our researchers in the future, to promote research grant results to the research community, to the public and to our donors, and to evaluate the contributions of our research grants to the achievement of the CTCRI’s mission.
The "End of Grant Report" must be submitted by the Principal Applicant within one month of the grant period end date. The report form for the Travel grant contains the required financial statement. Hard copies of all receipts need to be attached to the report.
