The following grant programs were offered by the CTCRI and its partners in the past. Currently no new competitions are being offered; progress of funded research proposals is being monitored.
Community-based Research Grant (2005/06)
This grant program was offered in October 2005 to support community-based, multisectoral research related to nicotine addiction. Priority was given to proposals involving the Aboriginal community, those exploring child and youth health, and those incorporating the topic of sex and/or gender.

Interdisciplinary Capacity Enhancement (ICE) Grants (2003/04)
This grant provided support for groups demonstrating committment to engendering a trans-disciplinary research culture and to attracting into, engaging and mentoring junior researchers or established researchers who have not worked extensively in health research in the past, within teams or networks.

This grant program is administered by the CTCRI and funded in a partnership with:

Research in Addictions: Innovative Approaches in Health Care (2005)
Two grant programs were made available to challenge researchers working across health research disciplines to undertake research that will contribute to our understanding of cross-addictions of alcohol, tobacco, illicit drug use and gambling in order to inform the intervention strategies of addiction professionals, policy makers, and the Canadian public.
This program was administered by CIHR through the Strategic Initiative "Research in Addictions: Innovative Approaches in Health Care" and funded in a partnership with:
- CIHR Institutes of Neuroscience, Mental Health and Addiction, Aboriginal Peoples' Health,
Human Development, Child and Youth Health and Gender and Health
- The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse

International policy research funding
The CTCRI funded three rounds of a small grant competition to promote international research: Research to Support and Inform Ratification, Implementation and/or Enforcement of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The third round for researchers in low and middle-income countries was completed in May 2006.
